Zen Shiatsu
with Lauri Genesio, LMT, RMTI

My body is in accord with my mind, my mind with my energies, my energies with my spirit, my spirit with Nothing.
  Book of Lieh-tzu

Shiatsu is an Asian Bodywork that uses gentle finger pressure, massage and stretching to revitalize the body's innate healing ability and intelligence. These techniques stimulate, balance and nurture a deeper functioning of the energy pathways precisely identified over centuries of observation. Shiatsu benefits people of all ages and conditions.

This 100 hour Shiatsu program will focus on the essential principles of Zen Shiatsu, Five Element Theory, and harmonization of yin and yang for better health and well-being. Students are encouraged to keep a journal through the course as they develop more awareness of ki, and moving from *hara*. Through lectures, meditations, and demonstrations you will learn an awareness of "hara", considered to be "the vital center of man," and how to recognize the phenomenal presence of chi, or ki, and its animation throughout life. This training will promote a deeper understanding of the meridian system and how to use specific "tsubos" and stretches to relieve pain and imbalances within a client's system.

Your shiatsu session will then demonstrate your knowledge of hara and the four essential tools used to assess the imbalances or condition of your client. From this training you will be able to comfortably employ the four protocols used to assess an imbalance:

1)   Bo-shin- general observation & appearance
2)   Bun-shin -listening to sounds & voice tones
3)   Mon-shin - verbal inquiries directed toward the client
4) Setsu-shin- assessment through touch .

Each weekend is organized around a meridian pair and its corresponding element. You will also be introduced to the practice of Chi Nei Tsang, the subtle manipulation of viscera, and how the use of seasonal foods can play into health and well-being.

2010 Training Schedule

June 5-6 · Wood Phase and Spring - 16 hrs - Saturday and Sunday (9am - 6pm)
Spring is the time of the Wood Phase; a time of re-birth and flexibility. This weekend explores understanding the values of a healthy Liver and Gallbladder, exploring "rootedness", and the "trunk" of our being. Where we are planted? Just how flexible are our limbs, or have they stopped growing? Students will learn and be able to demonstrate various methods and point protocols to address signs of stagnation in these meridian systems, including sciatic pain, tmj , hypertension, and migraine and headache issues.

July 17-18 · Fire Phase and Summer - 16 hrs - Saturday and Sunday (9am - 6pm)
This weekend focuses on understanding the values of a healthy Heart and Small Intestine.  As July edges toward the peak of summer, we open into the FIre Phase by exploring how the body may live in a "high noon" quality or response to life. We explore the inner dynamic of vitality and its dances with passion, communication, and drama. Why might we be all "fired up " or a blaze? Or have we "lost our fire"? We will address issues and imbalances with irregular speech patterns, sleep disturbances, chronic insomnia, and anemia. Through stretches and specific technique students will learn how to facilitate a deepening functioning of the Heart/Small Intestine system.

August 14-15 · Earth Phase and Late Summer - 16 hrs - Saturday and Sunday (9am - 6pm)
Understanding the values of a healthy Stomach and Spleen is the focus of this weekend. By exploring the nature of our equilibrium and connectedness to ourselves and community, we might ask ourselves: Is the ground beneath our feet? Do we have room for the life around us or are we too full to hold anymore? Through assessing and balancing our own lives we will better understand how to help our clients accept nourishment on all levels.  We will address digestive disorders, lymphatic dysfunction, and weight management. Students will be able to recognize conditions and begin to demonstrate techniques to improve imbalances they have determined through the assessment process.

October 2-3 · Metal Phase and Fall - 16hrs - Saturday and Sunday (9am - 6pm)
Understanding the values of a healthy Lung and Large Intestine takes us into this fall weekend workshop. We explore the unseen riches from where we come from, and the vigor of our "salt of the earth" ways regarding structure. This weekend students will address respiratory disorders, skin ailments, eliminations problems, allergies, and how various tsubo protocols, stretches, and manipulations can better tonify the Lung/Large Intestine system.

December 11-12 · Water Phase and Winter - 16 hrs - Saturday and Sunday (9am - 6pm)
Since our bodies are 78% water, understanding the values of a healthy Kidney & Bladder gives us insight as to how our system reflects the natural world of water. We explore the ever-changing expressions of water in nature and how the body may reflect a system in "free flow" or burdened with stagnation leaving us with the "blues.” Is our thirst being quenched, or are we in a "drought,” inhibiting our dreams and inspirations? As we move into Winter and feel the power of concentration and conservation, we may also be feeling chilled to the bone, with cold hands and feet. During this weekend students will learn how to balance the Kidney/Bladder system by addressing issues of Kidney/Bladder stones, urinary & reproductive problems, lack of stamina, and memory loss. By this time students will be able to assess an excess or depletion in the system and demonstrate a treatment that could offer relief and balance.

TBA Individually · Clinic and Practicum - 20 hrs
Clinic and Practicum are available to students who have completed the entire Shiatsu training. This part of the training will offer practice and review all material with the opportunity to  build a full Shiatsu session, a kata. You will learn to put together specific protocols to relieve pain and offer your clients tools they can implement for themselves. Students will participate in a community clinic in order to practice on the public with supervision. By the time this clinic begins, students will have completed many assessments and demonstrated skill in practice treatments.

Instructor:
After 18 years in the culinary arts and the natural food business, Lauri moved to pursue her long standing interest in Asian Bodywork and Nutritional Healing. By 2000, Lauri completed her studies at the Ohashi Institute in Chicago under the direction of Matt Sweigart, and then traveled to Italy to study with Luigi Garguilo, founder of Mi Zai Shiatsu . There, she realized a deeper understanding of Shizuto Masunaga's creation of " Zen Shiatsu '', and his particular integration of the mindbodyspirit.

In 2004, Lauri graduated from the Scherer Institute, and since, has taken on bridging the subtle and varied differences between the eastern and western perspective of bodywork within the healing arts. In her class , Moving Ki students are introduced to shiatsu, meridian stretches, and core movement techniques all within the context and focus of Five Element theory. Lauri has lived in Santa Fe since 1984, and maintains a private practice of shiatsu and massage.
