Lymphedema and Massage: Clinical Implications and Integrative Techniques for Those at Risk
8 CE Hours
with Rene Janiece, LMT, NCBTMB, CLT
Dates and Times:
Friday, August 15, 2008 (9am - 6pm)
Fee: $125
Who
is at risk for lymphedema and why? What does this mean for Massage
Therapists? With the staggering incidence of cancer in our society,
massage therapists are seeing more and more clients who have had lymph
nodes removed or radiated and are at serious risk for lymphedema, even
years after initial treatment. Unknowingly, a bodyworker can trigger
lymphedema in these clients. This presents an ethical and technical
challenge in working with people who have, or ever have had, cancer
that had lymph node involvement. In this one-day workshop you will
learn how to safely work with people at risk or affected by lymphedema.
Course content will include an overview of basic lymphatic system
anatomy and physiology, definitions and presentations of lymphedema,
guidelines for those at risk, and massage techniques which will allow
therapists to safely integrate the “at risk” or affected area into a
massage session.
Instructor:
Rene Janiece, LMT,NCBTMB, CLT René Janiece is the MLD (Manual Lymph Drainage) Program Director for Klose Training & Consulting, LLC, based in Boulder, CO.
Through this position, René offers MLD training throughout the US, and
also serves on the faculty of the Peregrine Institute of Oncology

Therapist, a Certified Lymphedema Therapist and Reiki Master. She has
been involved in the field of massage and bodywork since 1987, and has

Ethics: Therapist and Client Boundaries
4 CE hours with Bear Sahlfeld, LPC, LMT, RMTI
Dates and Times:
Saturday, August 23, 2008 (9am – 1pm)
Fee: $70
Many of the professional challenges faced by massage practitioners revolve around how clearly ethical boundaries between clients and therapists have been established. What are those boundaries, and what are the ways that we establish them? How do we confront incidents of boundary crossings and violations? What's more, many of these lines are temporal and change with a person's level of comfort and safety, so how can we be sure where we stand with our client and be clear about our own changing expectations? Come prepared to discuss experiences and questions around your personal challenges in honoring your own boundaries and the boundaries of your clients.
Instructor:
Bear Sahlfeld is a highly skilled and sensitive therapist, who has been practicing a variety of massage techniques and psychotherapeutic approaches for 21 years. She has been on the teaching staff of the Scherer Institute since 1986. OCTOBER
Essential Nurturing for the Child Bearing Year
16 CE hours with Elizabeth Rose, BS, LMT, RMTI, DONA Certified Doula
Dates and Times:
Saturday, October 4, 2008 (9am – 6pm)
Sunday, October 5, 2008 (9am – 6pm)
Fee: $250
This weekend workshop for women is intended to be an empowering Journey into the Heart of the Feminine: as nurturer, as mother, as sister, as professional and wise woman. As we take on these many roles when working with (or becoming) Women in the Childbearing Year, the true journey of Healer Heal Thyself begins. Through the sacred pathways of pre & post natal
nurturing touch, and labor support as a doula during the birth process, the student will develop her intuition, deepen her trust in nature's miracle, awaken the healer within, and strengthen her knowledge and skills in working with women in the childbearing year.
We will explore the myriad of feelings, thoughts, emotions, memories, associations, areas of trauma and areas of healing that may arise in the journey of parenthood or in working with women in the childbearing year. Once this rich "tapestry" is explored and the threads of divine knowing are discovered, then we can create avenues for clearing, healing and seeing in order to become pure conduits to assist in "uplifting" the family soul into a place of empowerment and enduring love & peace.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MASSAGE THERAPIST TO TAKE THIS CLASS.
Instructor:
Elizabeth Rose is a contemporary "Wisdom Keeper" not unlike matriarchal women of indigenous communities of the past. She has practiced and taught Massage for the Childbearing Year for 17 years, attended 85+ births as a Midwife Assistant and Labor Support Doula and is a mother to her inspiring 18 year old daughter, Maia. Elizabeth is a skilled and heartful teacher, acknowledged for her gentleness and support of women in their childbearing year. For twelve years, she has also co-produced and co-hosted a local, socially conscious weekly radio show, Transitions Radio Magazine. More recently, she has been a student of Family Constellations and the transformational work of Bert Hellinger.

MYODYNAMICS ™: The Spine
16 CE hours with Peter Ehlers, RMTI Certified Structural Integrator (SM)
Dates and Times:
Saturday, October 4, 2008 (9am – 6pm)
Sunday, October 5, 2008 (9am – 6pm)
Fee: $250
palpation, Latin palpare, “to caress or touch with care”
Myodynamics™ is an integrative approach to bodywork that honors and respects the uniqueness of each individual. By combining the direct work of connective tissue bodywork with movement and indirect techniques of positional release and muscle energy technique for joint mobilization, we create a dynamic and holistic system of evaluation, treatment and relationship. This model helps to disrupt the stability of the current dynamic and allows a new flow to emerge. Myodynamics™ evaluates the movement of the body using functional and structural assessment, then uses a direct or indirect technique to enhance movement.
In this course, we will evaluate the spine using structural and functional testing; practice different manipulation methods for contractile tissue and connective tissue structures that affect spinal bends and rotations. Integrating Connective Tissue, Muscle Energy Technique (MET) and Positional Release, we will learn how to develop a practical framework and solid treatment methods for the spine.
Instructor:
Peter Ehlers has a private practice in Santa Fe and was a Connective Tissue Bodywork instructor for the Scherer Institute from 1997 to 2007. He is a Certified Structural Integrator (SM) and is inspired by the vision of Ida Rolf. He teaches Anatomy Trains™ and studies with Tom Myers. Peter has studied numerous forms of related healing arts including Rockwell Myofascial Dynamics, Neuromuscular Therapy, Hakomi Integrative Somatics Trauma Work, and Process-oriented group work with Max Schupbach. Peter has a passion for teaching this work, as well as a deep compassion for the human spirit.

Bones of the Earth ™: Heated Stone Massage
16 CE hours with Chris Sherwood, LMT, RMTI
Dates and Times:
Saturday, October 11, 2008 (9am – 6pm)
Sunday, October 12, 2008 (9am – 6pm)
Fee: $300
Hot stone therapy combines the use of heated stones with massage to create a soothing, healing experience. Stones can clear and move energy, and they provide a grounding and calming influence. Because stones carry different qualities, students are allowed to choose and take home the 16 basalt stones that “speak” to them. Bones of the Earth™ is unique in that it promotes a creative, intuitive process rather than requiring a specific protocol. Students practice on themselves first to get a feel for the work. Then they work with one another, moving slowly and learning how to “listen” to and let the stones do the work. Participants are encouraged to incorporate the use of stones into their own practices, which can include acupuncture, massage, or chiropractic.
Stones are included in the cost of tuition and are gifted to the students. Please bring two large towels, a large spoon and a crockpot.
Instructor:
Chris Sherwood is a 1991 graduate of the Scherer Institute. She has practiced bodywork since then in Taos, NM. Chris has been working with stones since 1993, and has been teaching Bones of the Earth™ since 1997. She was on the Scherer Institute faculty as instructor for the Healing Quality of Touch massage class. Chris comes with a great variety of experience, from working in chiropractic offices to exploring a much more intuitive approach in bodywork. Her work is known nationally and she teaches in various places from coast to coast.
