Our Mission
The Scherer Institute is a leader in the field of bodywork education. In our massage therapy certification programs, our advanced trainings and continuing education classes, we strive to teach a grounded physiological and technical foundation in theory and practice while cultivating the development of sensitivity, presence and compassion.
The Scherer Institute is a massage school that is committed to teaching the necessary skills to work in more traditional Western medical settings while maintaining the integrity and principles of holistic bodywork traditions. We see this as essential in this exciting time when integrative medicine is evolving so rapidly and massage therapists are stepping into the forefront of this revolution in health care.
Our Students
As a massage school, we attract students from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds, ages and lifestyles. Many students are fresh out of college with training in fine arts, literature, business, and other specialties. Other people have experienced life changes or wish to change professions. Some students have children who have grown up and left the home. Others are retired and know it is time for a new direction. Some students work full or part-time, and some have families.
Students arrive at our door from the local Santa Fe region, from other states, and even from around the world. We enjoy the diversity of our student population because of the qualities they inspire: curiosity, understanding and acceptance. And when we train diverse individuals, the work extends into diverse communities. As Dr. Scherer used to say, “Take the work where it’s not.” In this way, our shared passion for massage and the healing process spreads around the globe.

Andrea Ullom '99,
Nurturing Therapeutic Massage Instructor
“I went to my 10th high school reunion and saw this beautiful, glowing woman. At the time I was actively searching for a massage school. I asked this woman, Jen Rivers what she had and could I get any of it. She said she had gone to the Scherer Institute to learn massage. I was hooked and enrolled for the next full time class. I was looking for a school that was addressing the health and wellness of the practitioner. I felt any school could teach me the strokes but only the Scherer Institute was interested in graduating healthy healers. Since attending Scherer's I have met my husband, had our child, Addison, and been honored to become a teacher of Nurturing Therapeutic Massage at the school. Thanks to Jen Rivers and that fateful meeting, my life has grown to the proportions I always dreamed of.”
